CLARENCEVILLE, Que., June 3, —The triple murder of the father, mother and daughter of one of the oldest and most highly respected families of this locality threw this unusually quiet hamlet into a state of ferment Saturday morning. The following are late particulars of the tragedy:— The Edy homestead is situated on a farm of about 150 acres in extent and lately has been worked on shares by Mr. Edy and a French-Canadian named Gilbert. Gilbert lives about 300 yards from the Edy residence, and Saturday morning rose at daylight as his usual custom and proceeded to the stables to water and feed the stock. Seeing smoke issuing from the Edy's house he rushed to Mr. Edy's bedroom window, intending to arouse the old couple. He discovered that their bed was undisturbed, and rushing around to the kitchen door forced it open, when A GHASTLY SPECTACLE was before him. On a chair was the old gentleman with a bullet hole in his head. On the kitchen floor were the bodies of his wife and daughter Emma, a pretty and accomplished young lady of 20 years. Their throats were cut from ear to ear and they also had bullet wounds in the head. Gilbert quickly dragged the bodies out of the burning building and raised the alarm. The house was soon reduced to ashes. That the Edys had been
MURDERED AND ROBBED seems beyond question. They were in the habit of retiring early, and the fact that they still had on their everyday attire when found demonstrated that they must have been assassinated early the previous evening. The old man's pockets were turned inside out, while around the girl's hand was a rubber band, which evidently belonged to a wallet and had been slipped over her hand while in the act of paying over money to the robbers. Her appearance showed that she was engaged in a death struggle, her face and arms being scratched and some of her clothing torn.

Seigneurial System

Louis Franquet is remembered today chiefly for his reports of 1751, 1752, and 1753, his many maps and plans, and his contribution to the building of the original Louisbourg.

The seigneurial system was an institutional form of land distribution established in New France in 1627 and officially abolished in 1854. This politically determined system of land distribution was regulated by law and had many advantages. Its purpose was to promote settlement in a systematic way. Seigneuries, which were usually 1 x 3 leagues (5 x 15 km) in size, were generally divided into river lots (rangs), a survey system based on the French experience in Normandy. The long, rectangular strips were particularly well adapted to the local terrain, since they facilitated interaction between neighbours and provided multiple points of access to the river, the principal communication route.
